Holiday Cottages on El Hierro
El Hierro, nicknamed Isla del Meridiano (the "Meridian Island"), is a Spanish island. It is the smallest and furthest south and west of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa. It is situated at 27°45' north, 18°00' west. History of El HierroThe name of the island is derived from the Guanche language toponym Hero, which by the process of folk-etymology was transformed into "Hierro," meaning "iron" in Spanish, due to its similarity to that word. Thus, Ferro (Latin ferrum, "iron") was and is used as an alternative name for the island. Most likely "hero" is the original name of what we to-day call a "cistern", due to the way the bimbaches saved water from trees. It is the name for the island in other languages, including French, German, and Danish. Pliny the Elder, who used Juba II as his source, names a series of Canary Islands, and it is believed that his Capraria may have been Hierro. The ancient natives of the island, called bimbaches, were conquered by Jean de Béthencourt –more through the process of negotiation than by military action. Béthencourt had as his ally and negotiator Augeron, brother of the island's native monarch. Augeron had been captured years previously by the Europeans and now served as mediator between the Europeans and the Guanches. In return for control over the island, Béthencourt promised to respect the liberty of the natives, but he eventually broke his promise, selling many of the bimbaches into slavery. Many Frenchmen and Galicians subsequently settled on the island. There was a revolt of the natives against the harsh treatment of the governor Lázaro Vizcaíno, but it was suppressed. Geography, flora and faunaLike the rest of the chain, the island is sharply mountainous. It has an area of 278 km². The highest point is situated in the middle of the El Hierro island, in Malpaso, 1501 meters high. El Hierro is home to many unique species, such as the El Hierro Giant Lizard (Gallotia simonyi). For more information on the flora and vegetation of the island see http://www.hierro-flora.de. Tourism & TransportationLike all of the Canary Islands, El Hierro is a tourist destination. It is served by a small airport, El Hierro Airport at Valverde and a ferry terminal, both of which connect to Tenerife. The island is part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It includes three municipalities: Valverde is situated in the northeast and Frontera in the southwest, both contain several villages. The seat of the island government (cabildo insular) is in Valverde town. 10162 people lived on the island in 2003. El Hierro AirportEl Hierro holidaymakers generally fly in via Tenerife North Airport. The flight lasts about forty minutes or alternatively there are ferries that leave from a variety of locations throughout the Canary Islands. If driving to and from El Hierro Airport, access is gained via the Valverde Puerto de la Estaca road. The airport is situated just outside of the islands capital town of Valverde. From here there are daily flights to and from Gran Canaria and Tenerife as well as La Palma during the Summer season. Ferries are available from Tenerife and La Gomera to Puerto de la Estaca on the island. Taxis are available from outside of the Arrivals hall. Be aware there are two airports in Tenerife. The one you need to use for El Hierro is that of Tenerife North. The details follow;- Tenerife North or Los Rodeos Airport Getting there/around Los Rodeos Airport is situated in the north approximately 11 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is the smaller of the two airports and generally used by domestic passengers. The resorts on the south are about 90 kilometres from the airport and it is recommended that holidaymakers heading for Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas land at Reina Sofia Airport otherwise known as Tenerife South Airport. When driving upon arrival, the airport is easily reached by the TF-5 motorway. There is a new four lane slip road allowing exclusive entering and departing the airport. People requiring bus transport should check out the timetable for Lines 102, 107 and 108 to get to Santa Cruz before transferring onto one of the routes taking you to the south of the island. Taxis are available from outside of the airport terminal.

Cottages to rent on El Hierro. Out of all the Canary Islands, El Hierro has the greatest collection of volcanoes. With in excess of eight hundred of these cone shaped structures, it comes as no surprise that El Hierro is recognized for being one of the least developed of all its tropical neighbours. A riotous holiday it will not provide but tranquillity it will, in plentiful supply.El Hierro is found to the west of the Canary Islands which are situated just off the northern coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Also known as the Meridian Island, El Hierro is the closest to Africa of all the Canaries.Fifty kilometres long, the island belongs to the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife which ultimately belongs to Spain. The capital of El Hierro is the charming rosy roofed town of Valverde.
