The Torrevieja Coat of Arms

Torrevieja Coat of ArmsThe Coat of Arms of the City of Torrevieja displays the old days, the old town and the coast. You will be able to see the ship, which is designed to transport the salt which is Torrevieja's trade, several houses where the fisherman live, gulls in the sky, near to the lighthouse, which guards the sailors night and day. Located at the top is the Royal crown.

Brief history of Torrevieja~Until 1802, Torrevieja existed only as an ancient guard tower, which gave the town its name that we all know today. Torrevieja in Spanish means Old Tower. In 1803, Charles IV authorised the movement of the salt production offices from La Mata to the town itself and allowed the construction of dwellings there. In 1829, the town was totally destroyed by an earthquake, but the dwellings were soon reconstructed. In 1931, Alfonso XIII gave Torrevieja city status by a special grant. During this period, there was a growing market for flax, hemp and cotton. During the 19th century, salt was mainly shipped from the town by Swedish and Dutch ships, followed by a limited demand throughout Spain, mainly in Galicia. By the 20th century, a quarter of all of the salt harvested from the lagoon in Torrevieja was sold in Spain itself, and the rest exported to foreign markets. Today it is still an important industry in Torrevieja and a major employer.

Phoenix Car ClubIt soon became evident that there were many cars and owners lurking in this wonderful part of Spain just waiting to get involved! The Council of Members who run the club, are all freely elected from the membership - along with ensuring the legalities of the Association and its aims and objectives are met, they are always on hand to help and arrange the many activities held throughout the year. The Association is open to anyone interested in the preservation, promotion and ownership of classic or specialist cars. The association has been recognised by many other clubs in Spain, and as a result there are invites to join other clubs at events and vice versa.
