Today, the city is a rich heritage site full of historic and cultural beauty. Catalonia is one of the 17 autonomous regions that comprise Spain. It occupies 31,950 square kilometers. Its population was approximately 6.8 million as of 2004, 690,000 of that living in the province of Girona in the same year.
