Beaches - Naturist Beaches of Andalucia

For those seeking isolation, head on over to Playa de los uertos, where you will find expansive, isolated beaches. For the more “adventurous” among you, try Vera Playa, famous for its large naturist beach. What is a naturist beach, you ask? You might know it by another name - nudist beach. Vera Playa is known as the center of nudism in Andalusia, and there are a number of nudist hotels, apartments and camping facilities to choose from. Such as Vera Playa Club Hotel

The Spanish Tourist Board estimates that around 1.5 million tourists visit Spain every summer with the express aim of practicing naturism. To this number can be added the estimated half a million Spaniards who habitually or occasionally enjoying sunbathing in the buff. Andalucía is the autonomous community with the most kilometres of nudist beach - or we should say, more accurately, beaches where nudism is habitually practiced. From secluded coves and busy urban beaches to great wide sweeps of sand that disappear into inifinty, there are loads of places in Andalucía for you to work on that all-over tan.

Andalucía is also the region with the most dedicated naturist accommodation. There are well-equipped camp-sites, apartment complexes, rural B&Bs, and there’s even a four-star hotel. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to start working on those white bits now!

Naturism and the law

The right to dress (or not) as you see fit is enshrined in the Spanish constitution, and theoretically you can be naked on any beach, or indeed in any public place. In practice, if you walk starkers down a busy High Street the Guardia Civil just might invite you to get dressed. Some naturist beaches are officially designated and signposted as such by local councils. However, there are many other ‘tolerated’ beaches, where people traditionally sunbathe nude, and at these you tend a get a total live-and-let-live mix of sunbathers topless, swimsuited and nudist.

Tourist areas, ever on the lookout for ways to satisfy large and small demands in order to foster visitor loyalty, have been adapting a number of zones, preferably beaches, for the naturist community in order to permit the performance of some leisure activities without exposure to the gaze of those who disapprove of or simply are not accustomed to nudity.

As in so many other things, the Costa del Sol has been a pioneer in this movement, which is quite understandable considering that the climate on the Málaga coast is gentle even in winter. That is why the first naturist colony in Spain, Costa Natura, appeared in the late 1970’s in Estepona.

Next to Costa Natura, on the beach of Arroyo Vaquero, there is another area reserved for naturism. Like almost all those in these environs, this beach has deep water and usually is not crowded. It has a small seafront promenade at a height of one metre above the sand on which the user can find restaurants, telephones and other services. Just as at Costa Natura, there are signs here in four languages indicting that this is a nudist area.

How to get there. Access to either beach is by way of the N-340 highway from Málaga to Estepona. After the roundabout with a large sign saying “Estepona”, you must take a turning that leads one kilometre towards the sea. The place has a large and free guarded car park.

Continuing eastward along the coast, and without leaving the N-340, you come to Cabopino. This is the site of Artola Beach, where the nudist area is known as Las Dunas. This is an undeveloped beach some 1,200 metres in length, enclosed by dunes and pine groves, that sees a medium level of use and has rather shallow water and little wave action. It has beach bars, restaurants, telephones, rubbish bins, a Red Cross post and other services. These are all in the “textile zone”, meaning that the nudist area, the place called Las Dunas, does not have any type of service. In reality, this nudist area, like others on the Costa del Sol, is mixed, as the “textiles” and nudists occupy the same area without any kind of problem.

How to get there. Whether going in the direction of Fuengirola from Marbella or vice versa, take the Cabopino turning. After passing two roundabouts, you must go down a sloping road that leads to the “Playa Artola-Cabopino” dirt car park. Continue down the slope to a second car park, this one with an asphalt surface, in front of the textile beach. Turn right and you will see the area of dunes next to a watchtower, which is where one enters the nudist zone

Located directly on the beach, the Hotel Vera Playa Club is situated on the Costa Almeria at the northern tip of Andalucia, Spain’s southern-most province. The Costa Almeria is on the same latitude as Tunis in North Africa and enjoys an exceptional climate with (usually) good weather from early spring through to late autumn. Five kilometres to the south is the small coastal town of Garrucha, whilst the town of Vera is 10km inland.

The Beach

Vera Playa Club has a good stretch of sandy beach which has been officially designated for naturists’ use and is nearly 1.6km long. Sunbeds are available on the beach (payable).

Naturism at Vera Playa

To save confusion, Vera Playa Club has a ‘dusk to dawn’ dress code. Clothing is required between sunset and sunrise. Nudity is permitted from your room to the pool or beach during daylight hours but guests are asked to dress for meals in the restaurant. The small parade of shops and bars in front of the hotel is not part of the naturist area.
