Only 20 mins drive from the old Moorish town of Mojacar and 2 ½ hours drive from the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada and with Almeria International Airport a mere 40 minute drive away. The Indiana course is the first desert course in Europe and has been built to the full USGA specifications and quality standards of the now famous desert courses of Arizona and California. It presents unforgettable views of the rugged mountain ranges and golf of such a dramatic nature that it can be said to have taken not only desert golf but also golf in general in this part of Spain to a new level of excellence. The Almanzora Region There is no other climate like it; for this is Europe's only desert, more akin to Arizona and New Mexico than anywhere else. This is really the Wild West! For this was the setting of many famous films of that genre, including Once upon a Time in the West and A Fistful of Dollars. The film set is now a great tourist attraction. It experiences the most sunshine in Europe, averaging 9 hours per day and the least rainfall, 7 ½ inches per year. It also has the warmest winter climate in mainland Europe, average max. day-time 20ºC (67ºF) October to March. The Almanzora beaches and countryside in the south east corner of Spain have escaped the weight of over development and mass tourism. There is no high rise development here and there never will be as the area is protected by strict coastal, environmental and planning laws. The local people, whose principal employment is fishing (the giant prawns landed in nearby Garrucha are famous throughout Spain) and agriculture, not tourism, are still warm and friendly to visitors. The course has unforgettable views and dramatic golf with volcanic rock beds and cacti for hazards. The upkeep of the course is outstanding with fairways and greens that can only be described as manicured. A great test for golfers of all standards and an unforgettable experience. There is a stunning practice area conveniently located next to the La Fuente development. This includes a putting green, driving range and chipping area. Lessons are available from the resident professional. For those who would like to play other golf courses, Valle del Este and Marina Golf, both full 18 hole challenging courses, are within a 20 minute drive. Resort and Surrounding Area In addition to the pool in front of the house, for the exclusive use of La Fuente residents, there are plenty of activities for the non golfer. There is a Day Spa, the El Torrente clubhouse and restaurant, the Crocodile Club with bars, restaurant, tennis, paddle, gymnasium, free form swimming pool and children`s play areas. For the fitness enthusiast there is the Daley Thomson designed trim trail. Close by is the pretty fishing village of Villaricos with its two small harbours and a selection of bars and restaurants. There is an excellent quiet beach on the edge of the village with its own Chiringuito. Along the coast is the fishing port of Garrucha with a wide variety of bars and restaurants, some serving the world renowned Garrucha Prawns (check the price before you order!). Only a little further along are the lovely beaches of Mojacar Playa with a huge selection of bars, restaurants, beach bars and entertainment. Along the way you will pass the water park at Vera, a must for children of all ages. Up on the hillside, seeming to cling to the mountain, is the charming white town of Mojacar with fantastic views around the Moorish fortress at the top of the town. Slightly further afield, on the south eastern tip of Spain, is the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park, a huge protected coastal area with spectacular cliffs, dunes, beaches and desert flora and fauna. There are little towns dotted along the coast with beaches, restaurants and bars while the Salinas de Cabo de Gata salt extraction lagoons have flocks of pink flamingos. An hour away is the Moorish influenced city of Almeria with the Alcazaba Palace, Cathedral, Boulevards, Port and shopping. Much closer to Desert Springs in the town of Vera there is a huge Saturday market, only one of many in the region. Just north of Almeria at Tabernas is the “Mini Hollywood” theme park of Oasys. This recreation of the wild west of America is where many films were made in the 60`s and 70`s. There are live shows, a wild west saloon, film museum, bar, restaurant, swimming pool and childrens play area.
